Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659-1743)
Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659-1743) Adjustment of the portrait of the sculptor François Girardon (1628-1715) for engraving, circa 1706-1707 Black stone, white chalk highlights 33.6 x 24.6 cm Passed with a stylus in view of a transfer. Traces of tiling. Traces of foxing. Slightly insolated. Glued in full. According to old labels on the reverse: "former collection Victor Chabert, /Exhibition at the Petit Palais 1928, /Sale Ader Picard Tajan, XI, 1978 ". Our drawing is preparatory to the engraving of the portrait of François Girardon by Gaspard Duchange. According to Mariette and Hendrick van Hulst, Rigaud provided the engraver, Gaspard Duchange, with a drawing of "an architectural front, curtain etc.", so that he could transpose Girardon's 1705-1706 portrait with a burin (see James-Sarazin, 2016, t. 2, no. P.922, pp. 312-313, repr.). The plate that Duchange made of it was his reception piece at the Académie on 30 July 1707. Some variations between the drawing and the engraving can be noted, in particular the disappearance of the sculptor's attributes in the lower right-hand corner, which will not be reproduced in the engraving, the absence of the large buttons, the disappearance of the geometric embroidery which hems the edges of the jacket, as well as the fringes of the tie. This drawing will be included in the supplement to the catalogue raisonné by Ariane James-Sarazin on her update site, published by Editions Faton: https://www.hyacinthe-rigaud.fr/ A complete study on the drawing by Mrs Ariane James-Sarazin will be given to the buyer.
